Features Of A Good Topic For A Persuasive Essay
The main goal of a persuasive essay is to convince your audience to agree with your side of a topic. There are many different topics in our world that have some grey area. They are not black and white. For example, it is against the law to kill someone. However, a killer may be put on death row and eventually killed for their actions. This is a great example of that grey area.
Persuasive essays are written using controversial topics that live in that grey area. There is no right or wrong answer, just an opinion. Let’s break down what a good topic for a persuasive essay.
- Controversial: A controversial topic is one that usually has about the same number of supporters as is does opposition. The closer the split, the more controversial the topic is. A good way to find out how controversial an issue is would be to take a poll. If the percentages are close, then the topic is controversial.
- Interesting: It is assumed that a controversial issue would also be interesting but this isn’t always the case. If you decide to survey which brand of cereal is better for you, you probably aren’t going to have a lot of fans. Choose a topic that effects the lives of people. Great example being if you believe in the death penalty. Is it morally just to kill someone for killing another?
- Relevant: There are times when you need to write a paper for a certain class. Be sure to use a topic that is relevant to the class. You wouldn’t necessarily write about the death penalty for your science class. A more suitable topic could have to do with whether it is moral to text vaccines on animals.
- Passionate: It is best to choose a topic that you are passionate about. If you believe in the cause that you are trying to prove, it will make the paper a lot easier to write. If you believe that it is okay to abort a baby that was the results of a rape, but not under any other circumstance, this may not be the best topic. You want to choose a topic that you believe under no circumstance should something be done.
These are the important features of a good persuasive essay topic. All that’s left to do is to choose one and start defending your stance on the subject.
